Risograph Printing
A Risograph printer is essentially an automatic screen printing machine that prints monochromatic layers of vibrant colors. It’s a Japanese printer that looks and works like a big 90’s office photocopier, but the results can look more like fine art screen prints. You can achieve a cool spectrum of colors by printing multiple layers on the same image. The printing method is way less precise and archival than giclée printing, but it has a charm that is unique to the medium. Individual prints will have variance in registration and color density
We have a RISO SF5130 Risograph Printer. It’s maximum print area is 8.5” x 14” (legal size paper). Our current four ink colors are listed below.
Bright Red / PMS 185 U / #f15060
Yellow / PMS YELLOW U / #ffe800
Aqua / PMS 637 U / #5ec8e5
Black / PMS Black U / #615d59
Formatting:
Our standard size for printing and packaging fine art Riso prints is 8.5” x 14”. These prints are packaged in a poly bag with foam core backing and a Super Art Mart branded sticker.
When setting up a print file, there isn’t always a best way to go about it, but here are a couple different things to keep in mind:
Color separation: if you can keep the colors separate when setting up / designing the artwork, that will make things easier. That said, we can do full color process separation using our three primary(ish) colors. So if you just give us a flat full color image for example, we can use software to separate the colors. The program we use for color separation, Spectrolte, is free and easy to use if you want to play around with it yourself.
Because there is registration variation between prints, it is often best to keep fine detail, like text or fine line work, in one of the darker colors (anything but yellow)
Here is a psd template that may serve as a starting point for setting up a file.
